Saturday Fun

It's rare that we have a Saturday all together. Adam usually works Saturdays and has every Sunday off instead, but this week we had a rare Saturday off as a family, which was nice. Wanting to make the most of it we headed to our local soft play centre for Ethan.

We missed last weeks playgroup due to a last minute, *ahem*, tantrum.. And then we will miss this weeks too as we will be sadly attending Adams Grannys funeral. So we thought that soft play would be a nice way to get a bit of weekly interaction with other children in for E.

He was a little nervous on arrival, he's only been to a few soft play centres before. But he soon forgot about his nerves and had a wonderful time. I took him down the 'big' slide as Daddy did it last time and looked utterly petrified, so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. And yep, the fuss and petrified look was most definitely reasonable! Those things, or at least this one, was utterly frightening. (I may be over exaggerating slightly - but it felt so fast!). ;)

I took a couple of pictures on my iPhone whilst we were there. They're not fabulous quality but they do make me smile when I look at them..

He had so much fun throwing balls around in the ball pit.

Fun on the carousel with Daddy.

I offered to take E on the go-karts and Daddy swiftly declined. I think he had much more fun then he would have people believe ;)

Yeah - I don't think the boats were a hit with these two. Look at their grumpy faces!

But they did try and like it, bless them ;)

The day ended with my in-laws round to us for dinner which was chips (and veg cakes for the veggies!) from the chip van and a few hours of card games, of which I didn't win any - boo! They also brought a birthday cake for Adam for his birthday which is Friday. We are going away to Rhodes on Saturday so it was the last time that Adams parents would be seeing him before his Grannys funeral on Tuesday.

Hope you all had a lovely weekend whatever you got up to.

Home Decor: The Frames are (FINALLY) filled!

If you follow along via my Instagram (@alexbumptobaby) you'll probably already know that finally I have filled the frames that have sat up on my kitchen wall for what seems like, umm forever! It took us so long to decide and it took us even longer to find a spare minute to sit down and actually have a talk about what to fill them with. (That's the joys of busy family lives, eh?)

But after lots of to-ing and fro-ing we eventually decided to opt for black and white prints from our wedding day. The frames are massive so we didn't want to go for three huge pictures of ourselves, so what we did was turn a picture of our wedding rings into black and white and we now have that as the sort of centre-piece to our frames. I think this works better then what would have been three big photos of just us two. I also think it's a bit different, which I like.. ;)

Tips for talking to Children about Alzheimer’s Disease

Alzheimer’s disease is a complicated and often intimidating one that can leave the most educated minds racing with questions. Therefore it’s no surprise that children may struggle with this particularly as it can be a lot to take in and understand.

We’ve put together some tips for dealing with this illness and talking to your children about it to hopefully make those tough discussions a little easier for them and for you.

Try and keep things as simple as possible
Obviously depending on the age of your child, you will no doubt go into a different level of detail with them regarding the illness, what it is and what it entails. Don’t be afraid to keep things simple if you are struggling to explain and just tell them how it affects your loved one, rather than the science of it (though if they do ask further, it can be great for them to go into further detail).
Be visual and use illustration examples
Explaining to your children what Alzheimer’s disease is can be made a lot easier if you can find useful visual tools and aids to illustrate it more clearly to them, as children thrive from visual examples. There’s a fantastic image here which signifies memory loss and can spark a really interesting conversation with your little ones.
Involve the person’s caregiver to offer extra info and advice
If your loved one with Alzheimer’s disease has assisted living with Extra Care at Home or other great companies, it may be a really good idea to ask the caregiver for their advice when talking to children about the illness as they’re likely to have dealt with those issues in the past. They may even be willing to talk to the child or children themselves too which can provide a good insight.
Encourage them to ask questions
They’ll no doubt have lots of questions along the way at various points, and it’s important that they feel comfortable enough to be able to voice them. This is another good way to avoid social faux pas or general slightly awkward moments which of course they won’t intend to create but are sometimes inevitable, especially with a topic like this.
Aim to keep the relationship between them going
It can often be quite tempting to refrain from taking your child to visit someone with an illness as complex as Alzheimer’s but you shouldn’t be tempted to give up and end the relationship. In fact, keeping the relationship as constant and similar as it always was can actually be a real comfort to the child and will help them learn a lot, too.
Help them if they feel frustrated
They’re likely to struggle with the situation just as much as you, especially as they may not understand exactly what is going on, regardless of how many times you explain it to them. Remaining as calm as possible and being there for them when they are feeling particularly frustrated is really important.

How to Choose the Right Washing Machine

It may not be the most exciting purchase you ever made. In terms of fun investments, washing machines are up there with boilers and renewing your car insurance. But, like these less than inspirational outlays they are a necessity, and a pricey one at that. With washing machines, there are a number of factors to consider. Here is some advice to take you through the necessary evil of washing machine shopping.

Choose a reputable supplier
A washing machine is an important investment that should give you an effective service for years to come. Electrical shops online offer good value warranties which will help you relax and get on with your life rather than worrying about your new washing machine giving up on you. It is a good idea to check customer feedback before committing to a supplier this will give you an insight into the company’s customer aftercare as well as things like delivery reliability.

Logistics
The first logistical factor to consider is the space you have for your new unit. Measure up before you go looking. Next you may want to consider a top loading machine, these are quite rare but often have a large capacity as well as the benefit of the door not opening outwards into valuable floor space. You could also go for a combined washer-dryer if you feel you haven’t got the room for a separate stand alone dryer.

Size
The drum capacity of your new washing machine will be an important factor dictated by the regular size of your washing loads. If you regularly produce a lot of washing, you might want to go to the upper end of the scale (sizes can go up to 11kg but this may be a bit excessive).  7kg size is usually adequate for the average household but it if you want to look after your washing machine it is vital you do not overload the drum.

Useful features
As well as the standard fast wash, baby wash, heavy duty and iron-friendly modes, many machines have features such as night mode or delay timer to maximise your time washing. It is worth warning, though, that machines which have the additional features rather than just do the basics well may have a tendency to break easier.

Efficiency
There will be an efficiency guide for all machines which gives you information on capacity, kw water consumption, and noise emission. From these statistics machine will be given an energy rating of A (least efficient) to A+++. It goes without saying that the better the energy rating will not just be good for the environment but your monthly energy bills.

Research

Washing machine prices can vary massively, ensure you shop around to get the best deal. There are now plenty of customer rating services to study the feedback on different machines and it is also worth considering services which some companies provide such as installation and taking away your old machine.

Five tips and tricks for flying with young children

Taking a break and going on holiday with the family can be a thoroughly enjoyable experience. It gives you the opportunity to spend quality time with your loved ones and forget about the daily routine for a little bit.
However, it can also be fraught with difficulties and problems. In addition to finding a destination or resort that suits the needs of your family, you also need to keep tabs on younger ones at all times, especially on the plane.
If it is your baby or toddler’s first flight, then it can be a strange and scary time. What’s more, you’ll also need to be mindful of other passengers, as a screaming child would be the worst start to their holidays too. Therefore, remember the following tips and tricks for next time you have to fly with young kids.

flying with children, flying with toddlers, flying with babies,

Choose your flight carefully
A long-haul journey at the peak of summer is probably not the best way to introduce your children to flying. Along with the hassle of negotiating busy airports and airplanes, your kids will get bored, restless and tired incredibly easily. Therefore, think about choosing quieter and shorter flights until youngsters are a bit more familiar with the experience. There is still an abundance of destinations to choose from closer to home.
Teach them about flying
Being able to fly among the clouds at immense speed is quite an amazing thing, which kids will be fascinated with. Ask the cabin crew how fast the plane is travelling to pique kids’ curiosity or look out of the window to spot the tiny houses below. If your child is fidgety or on edge, keeping his or her mind occupied is the best thing to do.
Pack your cabin bag wisely
Whether it is a teddy bear or colouring book, have a couple of your toddler’s favourite possessions close to hand. You may also want to pack some sweets and bottled water. However, put some other toys in your hold luggage, because if a bag was to go missing, you’ll be left with a very upset child.
Think about in-flight entertainment
Although several planes have in-flight systems with kids TV shows and movies, some additional entertainment is always a good idea. Pre-load your smartphone or tablet with amusing games and photos of your destination. Alternatively, let your child be the pilot or flight attendant and have some role-playing fun.
Speak to your fellow passengers
The sight of a baby or toddler sitting nearby is sure to strike fear in the hearts of your fellow passengers. The last thing they want is a noisy or annoying kid kicking and screaming behind them. Therefore, have a quiet word with those around you, apologise in advance for any problems and they’re bound to be a lot more forgiving.
One last tip is to take a neck pillow on board. If kids are restless, they are sure to tire out, so a nice, comfortable sleep might be all they need. Focus on your destination and think of the fun times head with the family.

Entertainment On The Go: Hobbies You Can Take Anywhere

Taking up a new hobby may be difficult, especially for those who travel too much and don’t stay in one location for long. Luckily, there are several hobbies that you can still take up even if you are on the road. For this type of scenario, entertainment on the go is the way to roll. Here are a few hobbies that you can take with you anywhere:

Reading a Book – Reading is one hobby that you can take anywhere you go. Just go to a bookstore, pick something out, and read. If you’re techie, you might want to invest in a ebook reader, so that you have countless books to choose from right at your fingertips. This also keeps your mind sharp and you will be entertained during those long road trips or plane rides.

Learn a Language – If you’re a traveler and looking for a good hobby, one of the things that you may want to look into is learning a new language. There are countless resources online ranging from free language lessons to paid ones. You can also grab a language book at your local bookstore. Learning a new language is fun, especially if you plan to travel to a certain country and get to speak the language that locals speak.

Photography – Getting souvenirs of your travels is a great way to remember all of your happy moments. One of the hobbies you can get into is photography. This allows you to keep remembrance of all your travels. Furthermore, you might even get paid for your photographs if you have exceptional work. If you are an amateur, all it takes is a camera and practice snapping away everywhere you go.

Urban Exploration – Urban exploration, or exploring abandoned areas, is a great hobby for someone on the go, especially when visiting different parts of the world. You get to see history or make up stories about a certain location. Just make sure that you are not breaking any rules when you go exploring.

Metal Detection – If you have interest in looking for treasures and trinkets, try metal detection as a hobby. A metal detector may not come cheap, but you might get the money that you put in with the treasures that you can find. Who knows, you might even hit it big and get something that is worth a lot.

These are just some of the few hobbies that you can take anywhere with you wherever you go. If you are a frequent traveler, it doesn’t mean that you can’t find hobbies that you will enjoy. You can still enjoy doing something that you love even when you’re on the go!

Fun trips you and your family are probably yet to make.

Sometimes months pass and it seems like you do little other than work, sleep and eat. However, you probably need a fun, relaxing trip more than you think. There are obvious trips for the family, but there's plenty that many find difficult to do without taking time off. However, here's a ton of trip ideas, and ones that will please the kids, regardless of their age. From tours, seeing animals and watching football, there's plenty you can to.
You've worked hard from Monday-Friday, so why not use your weekend off to take trips that you and your family will never forget? Everybody loves animals, so a trip to the zoo is a great idea. London Zoo has over 720 species, with some of the world’s most amazing animals available to watch and greet. The family can explore the Gorilla Kingdom, check out the Rainforest Life, and much more. A day out at London Zoo can be more than enough to relax you, and put a smile on your family's face.
Perhaps your children are older, and a zoo visit won't leave them as impressed. Don't fret; there are plenty of activities that will please them too. For your older kids a visit to see the Jack The Ripper Tour is a must. The London tour takes place every day of the week at 7:30pm, so whether you take a half-day off during the week, or fancy a day out in London, this is a must-do experience.
Perhaps you're the sporty type? You’re in luck, as there are plenty to see in the country’s capital. You can go and watch Arsenal FC, Chelsea FC or Tottenham. London is home to several of England's biggest football clubs, and you can enjoy the match experience, still visit the zoo and do the Jack The Ripper tour all in one day. It might be hard to make time for fun, but a day out in London can take the pressure off, allowing for you to enjoy its many attractions.
With services like International Coaches  allowing you to forget about driving/trains, you’re able to spend valuable time with your family. Better yet, whether it's a Christmas trip, going straight to the football ground or anywhere else, you can take the travel stress out and simply enjoy your family time. Wherever you may live, coaches are the perfect way for you to visit and enjoy the beautiful country, especially London. With London being on our doorstep it's easy to forget how much the world envies our capital city.
Still not convinced that England can provide you and your family with a good trip? Why not look at a family property abroad, and one you can visit any time you want. No hassle involved, all that's needed is time off and a way to get there, and you could be relaxing in style. Tenerife Estate Agents will ensure that you and your family have the dream property to visit, and then all that's left to do is to have fun.

Time passes ever so quickly, so don't forget to stop and have fun while you can. Whether in London, or abroad, a family trip is possible, and it might be just what you need.

Unexpected costs of having a baby!

With some estimates placing the cost of baby’s first year over £7,000, planning for the financial impact of the arrival of your bundle of joy should be one of your top priorities – and thankfully online budgeting is easy (and free) with tools such as a ’baby costs calculator’ – Find out more at the Money Advice Service.
There’s no doubt about it, becoming parents is a wonderful and life-changing experience, but making your money stretch further, particularly if your income is reduced while one of you takes parental leave, can put additional pressure on your relationship. Talking openly about how you will manage your money together, and having a plan in place, can help ease this pressure.

To help you get thinking about the impact, here are five costs you may not have thought about.
1. Childcare
According to a report commissioned by the charity Family Action, childcare is the biggest surprise when it comes to baby budgeting. In the survey of 2,000 mums in the UK, almost a quarter (23%) said it was the cost they were least prepared for. And it’s no surprise, figures show that even part-time childcare can cost more than the average mortgage.
David Holmes, Chief Executive of Family Action said: “This report shows just how vital it is for first-time parents to plan ahead before the baby is born and think about how they will handle both money and relationship issues.”
2. Formula milk
Breastfeeding is widely regarded as the best option for baby, but some mums can’t breastfeed and need to use formula. With tins of formula tipping the £10 mark, the cost of feeding baby soon mounts up. If you need help or support with breastfeeding, speak to your GP or health visitor as there are many local support groups available – you can find out more at www.patient.co.uk
3. Disposable nappies
Whether you opt for disposable or reusable nappies, there will be some sort of cost attached – if you are using disposables try supermarket own brands or look out for discount ‘baby events’ at which you can stock up on essentials such as nappies and wipes.
4. Heating the house and the increase in other household bills
Another important factor to add into your baby budget is the general uplift in household expenses – heating, electricity, gas and so on. You may find that you need to keep the house a bit warmer, or have the washing machine on more often. The increase may be relatively small, but remember it will come on top of other financial pressures.
5.Holidays in term time

Although you may have a few years to plan for this one, you’ll notice the difference when you try to take a holiday out of school term time. A recent Guardian report found that the same family getaway during school holidays is anywhere between 7% and 99% more expensive. So, keep planning and budgeting as your little one grows, and looking for the unexpected costs which could impact your family budget.

Me and You: September 2014

I'm joining in with Lucy from Dear Beautiful this month and hopefully every coming month for the 'Me and You' family portrait project.

I am a huge romantic and wear my heart proudly on my sleeve, so am very happy to share a snap of me and my lovely Husband Adam every month.

In fact this month I'm sharing two..

The first is from our trip to London. We had so much fun in London and it was so nice to have space to reconnect as a couple. We are so close in our everyday life and having Ethan hasn't changed that at all, but it is nice to have some 'us' time every now and again and go and do things that is sometimes a little harder when you have a baby. (Like travel to London and go to the O2 arena!)

And the second is of on my 26th birthday at Bourton-on-the-water. Ethan was actually with us here, he was very close to being asleep in his pram, bless him! Thankfully, Adam's become a bit of a master at taking selfies with our DSLR - so we can get nice pictures of us like this one. It's so lovely when we're both in the shot as it's usually one of us behind the lens. :)

Oh and yes, Adam's wearing the same shirt in both, it's a bit of a favourite of his ;)

Are Kids Safe in the Playground?

When it comes to private playgrounds, for example at the Brownies or Scouts hall, you have a right to speak out when your child could be at risk.  It’s not something we want to really think about, but in this day and age you can never be too careful!

So what’s a parent to do? You may have a right to speak up if you feel there is a security concern for whatever reason, but it can be hard. What’s most important is to approach it in the right way, offering sensible suggestions for how the playground area can be made safer for everybody.

You may deem the playground unsafe for any number of reasons, but no matter what the issue, it’s crucial to be armed with options for every eventuality.

So, for example, let’s imagine the playground is a bit of a jungle. If it’s untidy and there are trip hazards and the playground is overgrown, you might want to suggest a local landscaping company (which you can find through sites like Rated People) to come in and clear things up. What’s better, get a rough price from them so that you can present the playground owner with something concrete (pardon the pun). Decorative aggregate can make a big difference, as having the right kind of gravel around edges can really tidy things up and remove the hazard of any jagged flooring edges.

Another concern may be fencing. Whilst the world may not be as bad as the Daily Mail makes out, you still don’t want strangers to be walking onto the playground when your kids are on there. Companies like HC Courts can put fencing up to contain any area, such as a playground or sports surface used by kids.

Equipment can be another worry. Play equipment is made of some pretty hard wearing materials, but it inevitably will wear out eventually and develop some jagged edges and other concerns. Speak to the playground owner if you’re worried and suggest getting some new kit. New playground equipment can be pricey, but as a general rule it does last a long time so is a worthwhile investment to avoid any accidents!

Most owners of private play areas are focused on child safety, just as much as you are. They don’t want any legal claims of liability coming through from parents. For parents and guardians it is very easy to claim against others for things like this if an incident happens. Solicitors like Taylor Rose can support you in any claim you do have to make, but hopefully it won’t come to that.

Speak to the owner of the playground or organization and get things sorted before it gets to that stage if you can to ensure the safety of your children at the playground. After all, normally everyone involved in this kind of activity will want the best for the children and have the best intentions.

How to: Keep your Fencing Panels Looking as Good as New

When you first put up your freshly painted or stained fencing panels, they instantly transform the look of your home’s exterior and create a beautiful boundary for your property.
Over time, a combination of sun, wind and rain can soon add a combination of stains, mould and algae to the panels, meaning they don’t look as pristine as they first did.
Regularly using a pressure washer like the ones available from trusted brands such as karcher uk is a good preventative action for avoiding a build-up of dirt and along with sealing, helps to keep your fence sturdy and free of problems.
Cost-effective maintenance
Fairly frequent fence cleaning and sealing will definitely help to keep your fence in good condition and help it to retain its strength, as well as that appealing well-maintained finish.
Having a regular cleaning routine when you have the pressure washer out will also help you to save money in the long run, as you will get more life out of your fencing panels when they are looked after and cleaned on a consistent basis.
Prepare your fence
If you think that your fencing panels could do with another coat of stain to keep them looking as fresh as possible, it is important to make sure that you clean and prepare your fence before you apply any wood stain to it.
Cleaning your fence with a pressure washer will help to remove any dirt, algae or other debris that has built-up on the surface. It will also help to open the pores of the wood, which will make the panel more receptive to the stain.
Fence cleaning tips
It is best to use a light pressure for cleaning your fencing panels, and you may want to consider a different flow strength of water depending on whether the fence is made from hard or soft wood.
Cold water should be used instead of hot water, and for best results use a nozzle that has a spray angle of at least 25 degrees. Test the nozzle on an inconspicuous area first just to make sure that you have got the settings right.
Best way to clean
For a simple clean using your pressure washer, you can just use water and a nozzle tip that gives you good coverage with a nice and wide stream.
For excellent results, the best way to clean your fencing panel would be to use a consistent up and down motion to cover the area methodically. This will help you to get the majority of dirt and grime out in one go as you work your way along the grain of the fencing panel.
Practice makes perfect
As with a number of maintenance tasks, practice makes perfect. If you are using your pressure washer for the first time on your wooden fencing, it makes sense to start off with a lower pressure than you think is necessary and then use more pressure once you quickly get the hang of it. This will help you achieve the result you are looking for.
Your fencing panels are under almost constant attack from the effects of the sun which can fade the surface, and water which can lead to swelling and shrinking, as well as a build-up of things like mould and algae.
Using your pressure washer will help keep these problems at bay and help your home to always have beautiful boundaries.

5 secrets to a happier and healthier pregnancy

Congratulations, you’re expecting! Amongst all the conflicting emotions, foremost in your mind will be the well being of your growing bump, so here are a few tips to help you stay on top form throughout pregnancy.

Me and Mine: SUPER Late for August 2014

It's not like I'm even late just for September! (It's now more than half way through the month!) I'm actually a month and half late for Augusts! (DOH!) But I love looking back on these - so I am posting this anyway. Here's my family and I at Furtzon Lake in Milton Keynes. We decided to go on a totally random walk to feed the ducks during our annual leave week together for our wedding anniversary.

It was lovely and of course made a certain little man very happy,  as being outside and feeding the ducks are two of Ethans favourite ever things to do :)

Now I'm off to find a snap for September.. ! I WILL get more organised!.. One day! ;)
