Busy, Busy, Bees!

Lifeeee, it's going so fast! My head can't keep up with it! It feels like on minute it's 6pm on Monday night and then all of a sudden it's 6pm on Tuesday night. It's crazy!

I know that I've said before, but life sped up by about 1000% as soon as Ethan was born! My head is still trying to get around the fact that our October Lake District holiday has come and gone, let alone that Christmas has now passed and that today is New years Eve! Again -- it's just crazy!

But here we are another year over and it's been a fantastic year! A fast, but fantastic year all the same.  Last year we got married, this year we had a baby and I'm hoping and keeping all of my fingers crossed that next year we'll move house! (Yep, right now that's still (nearly) happening, but moving house is the only thing that is actually slow! So we'll see!)

I know so many people have also had such brilliant years this year, with the birth of their own babies or getting married, so there's a few people that may feel a little sad to see the back of 2013, but there really is so much to look forward to! :)

The future is ours to write.

Fighting winter bugs and keeping your kids healthy this New Year

As we kick off 2014 it’s important to remember that we’re still in the middle of winter and often this means viruses and infections are still spreading around schools, nurseries and playgrounds. It’s important to do everything you can to prevent minor illnesses from hampering the cheerful holiday season.
There are more than 200 types of viruses that can cause a cold, and if symptoms persist for more than three weeks, it’s important to see your GP. Having provisions like private medical insurance in place can give you peace of mind that your child can receive specialist medical treatment immediately in the event of a serious illness. There are also healthy habits you can do to teach your child to prevent sickness from spreading.
So take on board these 5 helpful tips for fighting winter bugs this New Year:

A Clever Little Money Saving Invention For Busy Families

Who's heard of Hive active heating? If you haven't it's worth having a little look here or, alternatively, reading on..

Hive Active Heating™ is built for busy lives. Using innovative technology it lets you control your heating and hot water remotely from your smartphone, tablet and laptop. Hive is an offspring of the British Gas team and the exciting new product lets you monitor, alter and control your heating and hot water all through the touch of a button on your smartphone or browser! You can adjust your schedules and temperatures away from home with the option for alerts to be sent to your mobile if temperatures reach a certain level. Which I think sounds pretty impressive, especially so for busy families on the go!

It costs just £199 for the full kit which includes a professional installation by a British Gas engineer. Oh and what's more is that it is designed to work with heating systems no matter who supplies the energy.

I think this is such a brilliant idea, there have been so many times where I'd find myself driving home to an empty home, wishing that there was someone home who could put the heating on for me to warm the house up ready for me to arrive home. So this sounds just brilliant for that.

What do you think?

Kids Photos: Natural or Staged?

Trying to capture the perfect picture of your kids can sometimes mirror trying to run a marathon whilst wearing a wetsuit and flippers. It’s difficult. And the more children you add into the equation, the more difficult it gets.

Knitted winter essentials for all the family

Cast your mind back to just a few weeks ago and you will remember St Jude and the havoc the storm caused in the south of Britain. I can remember watching the news in disbelief at what I was seeing. To say that winter had arrived would be an understatement!
The storm really got me into gear when it came to sorting out the family’s wardrobe for winter; summer clothing just wouldn’t cut it anymore. So, here are some of my knitwear essentials for winter 2013.
Hat
Once upon a time, a hat used to be a boring winter necessity. Nowadays, it may still be an essential but it is far from boring!
I have fallen in love with all of the eccentric character hats that are filling high street stores. However, I don’t quite think I’m brave enough to don one myself. I was doing a spot of online shopping the other day and I found the most adorable little hats for Ethan.
I absolutely love the Despicable Me inspired hats on eBay; Ethan is sure to love being transformed into a little minion. They’re surprisingly cheap too, so I’m thinking about picking one up to see him through the cold snap we’re about to have.
Jumper
No winter wardrobe would be complete without a selection of jumpers and cardigans that you can layer up to keep warm. Every year I buy cheap, thinking I’ve bagged a bargain. However, one go in the washing machine and they’re all misshapen and shrunk – they’d fit Ethan better than me!
Now I know it’s naughty to look at things to buy yourself so close to Christmas, but I’ve been having a look at the knitwear on the House of Bruar site. It may be a little more expensive but they have a fantastic range of classic knits that will last longer than just a few weeks.
I’m really tempted to just order a few of my favourite pieces – but I think I’ll just pop them on my wish list instead and let Santa take care of them.
Socks
If there’s one thing me and Adam hate, it’s cold feet. We have to have our feet wrapped up in snuggly slippers or thick socks – or we won’t be happy.
You can have the best winter boots in the world, but without adequate socks your feet will still feel chilly. I noticed that Primark have started selling the thick, insulated socks that actually have a tog rating because they’re so warm. These would make a perfect stocking filler for Adam to use during those frosty trips to the park.

The Best Christmas Gifts for Caffeine Addicts

When looking for the perfect gift for our loved ones, the first thing we often think about is what things they like. We usually opt for things related to their hobbies, like football memorabilia, CDs and home accessories.

Last Minute Stocking Filler/Secret Santa Ideas

Christmas Day is so close now and you may or may not have finished your Christmas shopping, but if you haven't and you're looking for some last minute inspiration for things like Christmas stockings or secret Santa gifts, then look no further..

Home Accessories | Wish List

It's fair to say that I have a thing for beautiful home accessories. I love getting new pieces for our home and finding a special place for them. I usually head to places like The Range and Dunelm Mill for beautiful accessories to decorate the house, but I've recently discovered that the popular online store, notonthehighstreet.com also have some gorgeous items for around the home. I'm a little slow to the party with this one, but I do love finding new places to shop. The above are just a few of some of my favourite items they sell, in particular I love the rose fairy lights - they're so pretty. They're a little on the more expensive side at £49.95, but as a cheaper option there are these at £21.50. I adore them.

Staying Safe this Christmas Featuring Santa Claus!

I remember one Christmas as a child, blowing out my Mums candle which was sitting on a shelf above the fireplace. I blew it so hard that it fell off of the shelf and onto the rug below. Luckily, the flame had already gone out but the rug wasn't so lucky and was covered in wax.

Another year, my Mum moved around the furniture in the living room just after Christmas whilst taking the decorations down. She accidentally put the armchair to close to the has heater but she didn't realise until my Dad, who'd decided to sleep down stairs that night because he was ill and didn't want to wake my Mum, put the gas heater on to keep warm. He fell asleep and woke to flames - the armchair had caught fire. Everyone managed to get out of the house, but the family home had caught fire and we lost the downstairs completely.

How do you know if your Cat has Worms?

If your cat has worms, it can be a really unpleasant experience for him, and possibly dangerous for other members of the family, such as young children. Therefore, it’s a good idea to get clued up on worms and how to tell if your favourite feline is affected.

Essential items for a baby boy’s nursery

Preparing the nursery for your baby can seem like a daunting task, especially when you’re a first time mum! You have no experience and only have the advice of family, friends, your midwife and various internet search results to help you. That may sound like a lot but in reality, it still isn’t enough! Wouldn’t it be great if someone could just draw up a guide that told us EXACTLY what we needed and even better, tell us where to put it? If only it was that simple. You have all these expectations when your baby is just a bump but as soon as they’re here, all that goes out the window!
Every mother is different so we are bound to want different things for our babies. Splurging on luxury furniture for our baby’s nursery may appeal to many of us but for others, the bare essentials are just perfect. So without further ado, here is a list with some of the most essential nursery items and where you can buy them.
For starters, your baby has been used to being in your tummy for 9 whole months, so you need to provide it with somewhere just as comfortable and cosy for when they arrive. Which leads me to say that you need a cot. Many women decide to co-sleep with their babies for the first few months after they’re born but at some point, they will need to be moved to a cot all of their own. There are many different types of cot, depending on many factors such as how long you plan on keeping it to your budget and colour scheme. Many of you will go for the traditional blue and white colour scheme if you’re expecting a little boy so keep this in mind when buying other furniture too (if you care about it matching). They come in various shapes and sizes and can be adjusted to suit you and your baby’s needs.
The next essential item is a dresser of some sort. A dresser will help you to keep all of your baby’s things such as nappies, wipes, talcum powder etc all in one place, helping you to stay organised. Many dressers also come with a detachable changing table on the top making your job even easier (and potentially saving a lot of money). Many mums like to buy a changing mat and use the floor or a bed to change their babies but if you like to save space, then this could be a great option for you. Here’s a great one from www.bambinodirect.co.uk.
If the nursery is the place that will end up being your baby’s future bedroom, then it may be worth spending the money on some matching furniture that is durable enough to last you a few years. Money doesn’t always equal quality but if you have some saved up, then this could save you hard earned pennies in the long run! From being tiny, I’m guessing your baby will have LOTS of clothes, mostly from family and friends fussing over you! So of course you will need a place to put them. A wardrobe with different compartments could be what you need as your baby’s wardrobe will grow as they get older with gorgeous little outfits and plenty more.
And finally, we all know how important it is to find a space where we can peacefully feed our babies, especially when they wake up in the middle of the night. For those of us who don’t want to risk waking our sleeping partners, the use of a nursing chair is a great alternative and gives you a place to  relax and bond with your baby.

The Best Last-Minute Christmas Gift Ideas for your Dad

As this is probably the busiest time of the year for everyone, it’s understandable that sometimes we may forget the odd thing or two. And why wouldn’t we? As we’re busy decking the halls, getting the kids sorted for Christmas and juggling a double-workload, we can be forgiven for not being 100% perfect.
However, what we can’t be forgiven for is giving the most important men in our lives a rubbish Christmas present. After all, they do so much for us, and where would we be without their support, guidance and free taxi rides?
If you have left things a little last-minute, don’t let that be an excuse to turn up with something awful on Christmas morning. We’ve compiled a list of the best quick and easy things you can get your dad that he is guaranteed to love.
Alcohol
Most dads love nothing more than kicking back after a hard day’s work at the office or looking after the grandkids, with a good drink and a good program on the telly. You could even go one step further to make the present more special by personalising a bottle of his favourite tipple, or the glass to go with it. This option is available here, along with a host of other Christmas present ideas for dad. Personalisation of any gift will instantly add a unique touch, and can turn an ordinary present such as a photo frame, a calendar or a pen into a really great one.
A book/DVD/CD
Check out the latest charts on any of these three options to not only finds out the newest ones available, but also the most popular. Read up on reviews to see if it’s something your dad would enjoy. Some sites and stores even offer recommendations on previous items that you’ve already bought, which can be useful if you opt for this choice a lot.
A movie/magazine subscription
This is a great gift as it’s one that ‘keeps on giving’. You can get monthly or yearly subscriptions to things like Netflix (or for a whole host of magazines), meaning that it would last much longer than just one or two DVDs. If your dad has a specific interest, for example in something like the wars or a particular sport, a great idea is a magazine subscription of that topic, especially if it’s an unusual one that can be quite hard to track down.
An experience day
Experience day gifts are forever growing popular, and it’s pretty clear to see why. You’re giving the recipient the chance to try out something amazing, and they’re often cheaper than you might think. They also make for a great family day out, as the whole family can go and watch your dad speed around a race track in an Aston Martin, or have helicopter training lessons, or even give ‘zorbing’ a go! If your dad prefers relaxing over adrenaline-pumping action, you can opt for something like an alcohol distillery tour or a stadium tour instead, for example.

Christmas Gift Ideas: For Babies (Part 2)

Ethan's getting Sophie the Giraffe for Christmas; as a teether they are beyond popular among parents and therefore have such a great reputation. I'm slightly excited to see if it'll live up to the hype and discover what Ethan makes of it. Sophie Giraffe from Loubilou is priced at £14.99.

These soft, hard-wearing, colourful blocks can be stacked or slotted together to make a variety of shapes. They are ideal for teething babies, who can chew them. It comes with 15 soft Clemmy blocks hiding under the turtle's shell, with wheels to push it along. Recommended age 6-18m. Priced at £17.50 found at Loubilou: Clemmy Soft Buiding Blocks.

Tiddley Pom offer organic baby products. The brand was was founded by Emma, because she wanted to help alleviate her new-born daughter’s eczema. With an emphasis on baby massage, the brand offers a range of organic baby spa products - all sourced by Emma herself and manufactured in the UK. The baby massage oil is my personal favourite for Ethan. They also sell a step by step baby massage DVD & CD bundle. Take a closer look here: tiddley-pom.com
I think this is a great little idea.. it's a soft toy named Bigsby and he comes with a story book, and whilst you're reading the book allowed to your little one, Bigsby chimes in with his own responses! It's great and really brings the magic of the story to life! Bigsby is from Hallmark, priced at £19.99.

I love the Humphreys Corner brand, it's so sweet and their products are always great quality. So this little wash set with an adorable little soft toy makes the perfect gift. Available at faithinnature.co.uk.

I'm a big fan of Natures Purest. If I had to sum up their items in one word, it would be: quality. I love their new Christmas range, they are selling an array of adorable items (like the ones above) that are just perfect for babies who are celebrating their first ever Christmas! Have a look here: naturespurest.co.uk.

If you haven't heard of these, or tried these on your baby. I would recommend you do. They are priced at just a couple of pounds on Amazon, so really not much at all, especially for what they do and how much time they save. Basically, they are there to keep your babies socks on, and that is exactly what they do. I can't tell you how many times Ethan's socks fall off a day, but with these on they stay on, all day. I love them! Have a look here: sockons.co.uk. Oh, and they also dribble-ons, which are lovely brightly coloured cotton bibs.

1.2.
3.4.
Sainsburys are a fabulous place to look for baby toys. Their Grow and Play range of toys are really good and they have lots to choose from, including (1.) Pour & Play Pirate Pete for bath time fun (£9.99) (2.) Funny Caterpillar, a pull along caterpillar whose patterns' spin (£5.99) (3.) Touch and Feel soft blocks, to help aid motor skills in babies as well as provide hours of fun! (£7.99) and (4.) Betsy Butterfly sort and stack, the perfect way to encourage colour and shape recognition (£6.99). It's well worth having a look at the Sainsburys website for more great baby toys.

Keep Your Home Secure this Christmas

The festive season is one of the best times of year for the whole family, but unfortunately, it is also a favourite for thieves, and therefore can be the time when our home is most vulnerable. As the nights are getting increasingly darker much earlier, and presents are appearing under our trees, it’s never been a better time to ensure your house is more secure as possible than at this time of year.
We’ve rounded up some of the best tips from the best experts to help you keep you, your loved ones and your possessions safe this Christmas.
Keep expensive gifts out of sight
As the kid’s lists seem to involve more expensive and elaborate items each year, it’s more essential than ever to keep those gifts hidden. Perhaps save putting the presents under the tree until Christmas Eve, and keep them firmly hidden until then in a secure place. Lofts and basements are always a good idea, as they are the most inaccessible to thieves.
Ensure your windows and doors are burglar proof
Keep windows and doors locked at all times to eliminate the chance of opportunist thieves entering your property. If your windows and doors have seen better days, it may be a good idea to think about updating them at this time of year, as strong uPVC doors and frames in particular are your best defence against criminals. As always, keep valuables hidden from sight away from windows, and never have spare keys outside your property, even if they are well hidden. Leave them with a neighbour or family member instead.

Take precautions if spending the holiday away from home
If you’re lucky enough to be spending the festive season away this year, there are a number of things you can do to reduce any problems. Be careful about where you advertise your holiday – for example, don’t post details on social networking sites until you have returned, so that potential thieves are not aware of when your house will be unoccupied. Also, why not invest in light timers that you can set to turn your lamps/lights on at certain, specified times, to make it appear as if someone is at home. Ask a trusted neighbour or friend to keep an eye on your home whilst you’re away, too.
Be wary when using festive lighting
Christmas lights and decorations are a great part of the holiday period, but they can also cause problems regarding security. Ensure the outside lights are left on even whilst you are not at home, so that it appears that you are. However, be sure to turn Christmas tree lights off when you aren’t present, as this can be a dangerous fire hazard. You could even ask a neighbour to turn your lights off at a certain time, if you know you are going to be very late home.
Take the time to test your burglar alarm
A visible burglar alarm on the outside of your house can automatically be a strong deterrent to burglars, as it shows that your home is protected. However, if it does not work, it will of course be pointless. If thinking about updating your alarm system, do a lot of research to find out which system is the best for your property, budget and lifestyle.

Guest Post: Baby feeding: Starting solid foods

There comes a time in every baby’s life when the food on your plate starts to look more appealing than what she’s been eating. Is it time to start feeding your baby solid foods?
Here are a few things to think about:
  • Is your baby around 6 months old?
  • Can she sit up with support and hold her head up by herself?
  • Does she show interest in solid foods, for example, by watching you when you eat and opening her mouth or moving it as though she was chewing?
  • When you offer her a spoonful, does she take it into her mouth and move her jaw rather than pushing it out with her tongue?
  • Has she doubled her birth weight (about 13 pounds or more)?
  • Is she still hungry after a full feed of breast milk or formula?
If the answer to these questions is yes, your baby might be ready to enter the world of solid foods.
First foods
In the past, parents were advised to start with a single-grain cereal and introduce solid foods in a specific order: rice cereal, vegetables, fruits, then meat. We now know that there’s no scientific evidence to show that introducing foods in a specific order is necessary. Of course, it's fine to introduce foods in the traditional order if you prefer, but if you think your baby is interested in trying a different food first, that’s alright as well.
The following guidelines do still apply:
  • Introduce new foods one at a time, and wait two to three days between each new food to watch for an allergic reaction, such as diarrhoea, a rash, or vomiting.
  • Even though it’s called solid food, your baby’s first foods won’t actually be solid at all. Instead, the foods will be soft or pureed -- i. e. what we generally think of as baby food and find in little jars at the supermarket. If you like, you can also puree food in a blender or food processor. Just make sure everything is reduced down to the point that it no longer requires any chewing. You can also try mixing in a bit of breast milk or formula to make your baby’s first solid foods taste more familiar.
  • Offer small bites - half a spoonful or a bit on the end of your fingertip is enough. And don’t expect your little one to start feeding herself yet. That will come later when she’s ready for finger foods.
  • If your baby turns her nose up, don’t force the issue. Go back to breast milk or formula for a little while longer. There’s plenty of time for your baby to learn to enjoy solid foods.
  • Don’t forget breast milk or formula. Just because your baby has started on solid foods doesn’t mean she’s ready to be weaned off milk. On the contrary, breast milk and/or formula will continue to be an important part of your baby’s diet until she’s at least 12 months old.
As you start feeding your baby solid foods, remember that mealtimes aren't just for eating -- they're important social times as well. So as your little one takes her first tastes, make it a family affair and enjoy your meal together. Bon appétit!

Love Sleep Play: Baby Love & Care

Stage 2 Baby Recipe; 6 to 9 Months - Cheesy leak, Sweet Potato + Cauliflower

I thought that I might start to share a few recipes for meals that I've been cooking for Ethan lately with you all. They are actually all taken from various cookbooks, but I thought that perhaps they might be of some use to people looking for some baby-meal inspiration, particularly vegetarians, as all the meals I cook for Ethan are indeed meat free.

Cheesy leak, sweet potato and cauliflower

Taken from: Annabel Karmel 'Weaning'

Ingredients..
10g unsalted butter
5cm piece of leak, sliced
1/2 small sweet potato, peeled and diced (about 150g)
250ml boiling water
2 good sized cauliflower florets, cut into small pieces
30g cheddar cheese, grated

Method..
1. Heat the butter in a pan and add the leak. Sauté gently until softened (about 3 minutes)

2. Add the sweet potato, pour over the boiling water, bring back to the boil, and cook for 5 minutes. Add the cauliflower, reduce the heat to moderate, cover, and continue to cook for another 5 minutes.

3. Puree the contents of the pain in a food processor or with a hand blender together with the grated cheese.

4. Freeze in individual portions. Thaw overnight in the fridge or for 1-2 hours at room temperature, then microwave or reheat in a small pan until hot. Stir and allow to cool before serving.

Offer as a lunch or dinner, with a drink such as cooled boiled water. I usually offer a dessert of a yoghurt like these petits filous or some mashed up banana.

Guest Post: Top Tips for a Successful Pre-Xmas Sort Out

Many people choose to declutter during the springtime – it’s a refreshing time of the year to do it and can be massively therapeutic once the hectic Christmas season has been and gone. However, that’s not always the best time to catch the decluttering bug. If you have the time to do it, giving your home a well-deserved sort out before Christmas would be a sensible plan, making room for new things as well as being able to show off your tidy and organised home to anyone who is planning to visit over the festive period.
It’s understandable that decluttering can be found on many a New Year resolution list – we manage to pack so much into our homes throughout the year without even realising it and, unless you’re a strict minimalist who can’t handle the hoarding, you’ll find that you pick up things along the way that you don’t even need. Giving your home and your life one big sort out over the winter period will make you feel much better about yourself; knowing that everything has a place and there’s nothing in your home that isn’t needed is an awesome feeling.
Break it down
Tackling an entire house’s clutter would be a daunting task for the best of us, so break it down into individual tasks; make a list so that you can cross things off as you go. Start at the front door and work your way back and then head upstairs. Perhaps the downstairs toilet has turned into an oversized cloakroom. Throw away, sell or donate anything that you won’t be using again; if there are school shoes that are too small for the kids in there, what are they still in there for? If you think they’ve seen better days, replace them with one good pair of school shoes for boys from George at ASDA. Once you’re done with that task, give the room a good clean and cross it off your list.
Donate and sell
Don’t assume that because you don’t want your stuff anymore, someone else won’t. Rather than making a beeline for the tip, consider dropping things off at the local charity shop or, if its toys and books, the local children’s centre or preschool would appreciate them. Alternatively, sell things online – eBay can be a magical place for making some cash off your unwanted items.
No more “we might need it one day”
If you want to have a completely decluttered home, be ruthless. You have to be. Take a look at your belongings and think long and hard about whether you actually need them. Do you really need that blow up bed, just in case? Is that printer ever going to get used even though it’s not compatible with your PC? Probably not. If you insist on keeping hold of things, put them in the loft if they’re hardly ever used.
Sort through your closets and storage cupboards and minimise on everything you don’t need. That includes the kids’ stuff, too (even if they will kick up a fuss).

Christmas Gift Ideas: For Men

I never knew, until recently, that Go Ape now boasts 'Forest Segway'. My Husband and his Dad went for a day out together last weekend to have a mess about on the segways at Black Park, they said it was brilliant and a totally surreal experience. Per rider it's £30, and personally after the fun my Husband seems to have had I couldn't think of a better gift to suggest for men this Christmas than a ride on a segway at Go Ape.

I know, I know, hip flasks usually come up in these sort of guides all of the time. But I couldn't not include these because I think their something a bit more special about these from buyahipflask.com; they're really nice. My favourite is this world map one, but they sell lots more including a Ted Baker stag design which is, again, a really nice design. And as you'd probably expect it is possible to get them engraved too if desired. Worth a look.

These Jam headphones are a great buy for any music lovers you might know. They're bluetooth enabled for up to ten meters and have up to six hours wireless play, with lots more additional features including a build-in microphone.

I'm a big fan of the Micro Pedi for women. It really leaves my feet feeling ultra soft, every single time. So I think the Micro Pedi Man would make a great little gift for men who like to take care of themselves, in particular their feet. This really is a great little gadget.

This hair gel gift set from the MITCH by Paul Mitchell range, is one you just cannot go wrong with. It contains both Hardwired and Clean Cut and makes for perfect hair styling. One for the men who like to take care of their hair.
There whisky stones by Teroforma make a perfect gift for whisky drinkers who want a cool drink but without ice cubs watering it down. Pick these up here.
Sticking with the whisky theme, you can't go wrong with these Famous Names chocolates from Elizabeth Shaw. Rich dark chocolate with smooth liqueur centres. Stocked in Asda for £5 per box or on special offer at 3 boxes for £10.

The classic shave tin is from Wilko and is just £10. A great little festive gift for younger brothers this Christmas.

Butlers chocolates are that luxurious that they often leave me not wanting to break the seal on the box just because the box feels just as luxurious as the chocolates inside do. They make the perfect gift all year round but especially so at Christmas.

Ted Baker's Teds Big Swig is a lovely gift. Especially so for any biking fans, at it's just one of the fabulous gift sets in the Tour De Ted range. I'm a big fan of anything Ted Baker, so for me, this is an ideal gift for men. This can be picked up at Boots and is part of their 3 for 2 collection currently.
