Five Week Old Constipated Baby + Chest Rash

I'm a worried Mama today, Ethan's not been himself since Monday, he's been very restless, upset if I leave him for a moment, and he hasn't pooped since Sunday night. Add to that a rash on his chest and a lot of sick coming up and it results in my concern. Maybe I'm being over concerned but I'm new to this and he's just so young.

We took him to the Doctor yesterday and she didn't seem concerned, said he had a 'non specific rash' and that we should try cool boiled water to help him go to the toilet. We are to call back Thursday/Friday if he still hasn't been able to open his bowels or if his rash gets worse.

That made me feel better, but it's still horrible watching him struggle to poop and being sick so much after his bottles. He's had some cool boiled water and is currently asleep {which is better than yesterday and the day before when he just wouldn't sleep without being on me} so I'm hoping we get a poop soon so that he starts to feel better.

Have any of you had any problems like this with your babies? Is this normal? I understand that formula fed babies are more likely to get constipated but he took his last poop Sunday night, {when he was going every 24 hours}?! Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

*Update*
He has now been to the toilet! The cool boiled water worked! :) Yay!

HOWEVER his chest rash does seem quite a bit worse:

Should I be worried? Or is this common in new babies? Like I said previously the Doctor wasn't concerned but obviously as his Mum I am. :|

    1. No it doesn't seem to be. Yeah that's true. I'll have to watch what we're using. x

  2. My baby boy used to have poopy diapers all the time, then they suddenly became less and less frequent. I took him to the doctor about that and something else, but she said it was nothing to worry about. He ended up pooping a day later on his own. Now he just goes about once a week, sometimes it's even longer than that. I'd say as long as your little bit goes every now and then and it's not hard there is nothing to worry about. The rash... maybe it's something you are eating. Have you considered cutting something out of your diet for a few weeks to see if it helps? Like dairy or something. Unless you are only formula feeding, then maybe it's the type of formula? I don't know. That is. Ne of the hardest parts about being a new momma, not knowing what is wrong and how to make it better. I hope the rash clears up soon!

    1. Thanks for the suggestions. I am just formula feeding him. I'm going to monitor it over the next few days and see if it starts to clear up by itself.

Yeah that really is the hardest part of Mummyhood!

  3. I'd say the rash is eczema. My boy had a similar one; doc prescribed a moisturiser and bath lotion worked a treat. Also I so know the pain of a young constipated baby; all the belly issues they seem to have! It will settle down by 3-4 months and he will cope much better with moving things through!! X

  5. Ava used to get constipated quite a bit. I used to add a little apple juice into cool boiled water, it did the trick. Glad he's been for you now though can't be nice for them :(.

I'd go back in about the rash hun. Ava's skin never agreed with johnsons products as they were always too heavily scented and used to irriate her skin.

    1. From what age did you use the apple juice from?

I might try some different products then and see how we get on.

  6. I'm glad he's been to the toilet - definitely keep up the water, it helps Tyne a lot just to have a few sips of cool boiled water between his bottles.

Also - Tyne has a similar rash on his chest every now and then, but it usually only appears when he's a bit hot. I always think its a heat rash - does this rash appear when Ethan is hotter than usual or is it ALWAYS there?

If its always there, I would personally want more answers than the Dr seems to be giving you. I would take him to a childrens A & E so a paediatrician can have a look at it, I sometimes think GPs are too quick to pass off concerns of new mummies :/

    1. It's only been two days with the rash now, and you're right it could well be some sort of heat rash it was hot on the day he got it! I'll keep an eye on it and if it doesn't pass soon I'll be back at the Docs.

  7. My oldest would get terrible constipation Alex, try not to worry too much, I know that's hard and easily said. I found changing her milk (she was ff) from SMA to Hipp Organic made a world of difference. It just agreed with her far better.

Hope his rash gets better. Keep taking him to the doctors if you are concerned. I'd rather be a fussy Mummy than a neglectful one any day!!

  8. Just found your blog (just getting into Mom blogs - previously I seemed to always end up on cooking/baking blogs) - my 13 week old has a rash like that which I think may be due to heat. Looking forward to reading more!

  9. This is exactly what my 7-week-old has. Did you ever figure out about the rash?

    1. Sorry to hear your little one has a rash. Ethan's went away quite quickly after this,I believe it was a heat rash in the end. x
